Arts Center Ushers Donate $2,000 for NWFSC Scholarship

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

5/11/2010 - The volunteer usher corps at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center of Northwest Florida State College recently presented a $2,000 college scholarship to NWFSC music theater major Stephen Shouse of Fort Walton Beach (shown center). Audrey Bailey, Head Usher at the NWFSC Mattie Kelly Arts Center (left) was joined by college interim president Dr. Tom Delaino (right) to congratulate the scholarship recipient.

The college's dedicated corps of more than 100 volunteer ushers have previously donated scholarship funds to provide partial scholarship support or funds for books, but this is the first major scholarship the group has provided. "The full scholarship was made possible by the proceeds of concession sales that the ushers raised while working various college events," said Bailey. "They wanted to put the entire amount toward helping a student and we're very proud to make this award." The scholarship starts in fall 2010 term and will assist Shouse to complete his studies at NWFSC, where he is also an active member of the college's Madrigals and Show Choir performance groups.

The Mattie Kelly Arts Center ushers volunteered approximately 7,000 hours this past year, assisting with all public events held at the arts complex - from symphony concerts to commencement. Ushers direct patrons to their seats, hand out programs and most importantly, present a warm welcome to patrons of all events held at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Ushers received free admission to the events at which they volunteer. Additional ushers are needed. For information on becoming a Mattie Kelly Arts Center usher contact Delores Merrill, House Manager, at 729-6065.
