"Legally Blonde" Will Debut at Mattie Kelly Arts Center in Niceville on January 5

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

12/16/2010 -

The first national tour of Broadway's new smash hit musical "Legally Blonde" will appear at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. The show is the first of a string of national touring Broadway shows that will appear at the center throughout January and February, including "The Color Purple" on January 16, the Elvis music extravaganza "All Shook Up" on January 27, the "Dance Theater of Harlem" on February 7, a European opera company performing the Puccini masterpiece "Turandot" on February 19 and a newly added one-man national touring show "Buffalo Soldier" on February 15.

A hilarious MGM film adapted into a hit musical, "Legally Blonde" turned Broadway hot pink in what critics called "a feel good song and dance juggernaut" (New York Magazine). In its first year on Broadway, "Legally Blonde the Musical" earned seven 2007 Tony Award nominations, ten 2007 Drama Desk Award Nominations, and a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award.

The musical also ranked in the top ten list of the most requested Ticketmaster "Arts & Theatre Events" for 2007. "Legally Blonde the Musical" also received three 2009 Touring Broadway Awards in New York City on May 4, 2009. The show won awards for Best New Musical, Best Production Design and Best Choreography of a Touring Production. In the fall of 2007, MTV aired "Legally Blonde the Musical" in its entirety to stellar ratings and was subsequently nominated for two 2007-2008 Daytime Emmy Awards.

As on Broadway, Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell is the director and choreographer of the national touring production that will appear at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Music and lyrics are by both Laurence OKeefe and Nell Benjamin, and the book is by Heather Hach.

Don't miss sorority star Elle Woods, an underestimated blonde who doesn't take "no" for an answer, as her boyfriend dumps her for someone "serious" and Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before - Harvard Law! Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style. "Legally Blonde The Musical" will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway's brightest new heroine (and of course, her chihuahua, Bruiser). The verdict? This much fun shouldn't be legal!
