Piano Professor Presents Recital of Liszt Music at NWFSC

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

9/30/2011 - In celebration of Franz Liszt's 200th birthday, Northwest Florida State College piano professor Lois Van Dam, along with several of her advanced students, will present a recital of the renowned composer's piano music. The free event will be held October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tyler Recital Hall of the music wing at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville. Select piano students will perform along with Ms. Van Dam, including Scott Derrick of Destin, Dylan Garofalo and Fletcher Wilson of Santa Rosa Beach, Dr. Stephen Gilmore of Navarre, Roy Hoobler of Freeport, and Eunji Tuttle of Fort Walton Beach.

Among the works to be played are Liszt's Liebestraume No. 3, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15, Waldesrauschen, selections from Annees de Pelerinage, several song transcriptions, and several of the Transcendental Etudes. The recital will be performed on the college's new Yamaha C7 piano. Admission is free, but donations towards the college's piano fund will be accepted. For information, contact the NWFSC Fine & Performing Arts Division office at (850) 729-5382.

In addition to teaching piano at NWFSC, Ms. Van Dam teaches voice and conducts Belle Voci, the NWFSC women's ensemble, and leads the Northwest Florida Symphony Chorale, a select group of community vocalists who perform with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra (NFSO). She has been professionally involved in choral music for more than thirty years. In the community, she is organist and choir director at St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Destin, and is pianist for the Pro Arte Chorale in Santa Rosa Beach. She performs frequently as a solo pianist and accompanist. From January 2006 to June 2007, she served as interim conductor and music director of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and she presently performs with the professional orchestra as pianist.

Also a choral composer and arranger, Ms. Van Dam's works have been performed in a number of colleges and churches. Before moving to Niceville in 2002, she lived in the Boston area, where she taught at Eastern Nazarene College, serving as conductor of the college's Choral Union and Orchestra and as piano instructor. She was also pianist and often served as chorus master for Boston's Chorus pro Musica, and in that capacity prepared the group for performances with the Boston Pops and the Pittsburgh Symphony.
