Northwest Florida State College Opens Doors for Community Open House

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

2/18/2014 - Approximately 500 people attended the Community Open House event held on the Niceville campus of Northwest Florida State College on February 17th.

The day began with an Opening Ceremony to kick-off the Community Open house event and recognize the President’s Day Holiday and the College’s 50th Anniversary. The Opening Ceremony was held in the central campus green-space quad connecting the Student Services Center and the Activities Center- two buildings that serve as a hub of activity for students, faculty and staff of NWF State College.

“We are pleased to look back on many accomplishments that have made Northwest Florida State College one of the top state colleges in Florida,” said Brian Pennington, NWF State College Board Chairman. “Today, as you tour our beautiful campus and enter our hallways and classrooms you will quickly notice the traditions that we have established at NWF State College. These same traditions are what brought us to where we are today and we look forward to many more years of service to the communities of Northwest Florida.”

The Open House featured the entire campus and a host of free activities, tours, faculty seminars, program demonstrations, art exhibits, door prizes and more.

Door prize winners were:

• Arts Center Basket, Victoria Simmons, Niceville

• Student Services Center Basket, Patty Tanner, Shalimar

• Activities Center Basket, Richard Forest, Niceville

• Nook HD+, Robin Stiles, Niceville

Some of the unique activities offered as part of the Open House included fire tower and vehicle burns with firefighting demonstrations by the college's Fire Science program; 15 intriguing faculty seminars on everything from fossils to philosophy and career change to climate change; free portrait photography by Graphic Design students; demonstrations by Nursing students of the college's state-of-the art patient simulators; and a Humanities lecture that included a film screening. College staff in Admissions, Financial Aid, Advising, Veteran's Affairs, the Career Center, Professional and Continuing Education were also on hand to help students and prospective students during the event.

Dr. Frank Goldstein, local historian, also led tours of the College’s Doolittle Raider History exhibit located in the lobby of the NWF State College Raider Arena. Dr. Goldstein shared with guests about the famous WWII heroes who trained for their historic mission at Eglin Air Force Base and how they serve as the inspiration of the College’s mascot, “Raiders.”

Each year, the Open House extends to many areas of the 265-acre Niceville campus that are normally closed to the public; including public tours of the Okaloosa County Emergency Operations Center, which moved to state-of-the-art facilities at NWF State College in 2011, the college's observatory, and more. College performing arts groups also presented open rehearsals during the hours of the Open House event at the college's Mattie Kelly Arts Center.
