Open Auditions for OKLAHOMA April 25

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

2/11/2015 - OPEN AUDITIONS April 25 for NWF State College Summer Musical Production of Oklahoma!

Oklahoma!, one of the most popular musicals in Broadway history, will be presented July 15 – 18 as the 2015 summer musical production of the Humanities, Fine & Performing Arts Division of Northwest Florida State College.

Open auditions for Oklahoma! will be held Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. A cast of 5 males and 3 female leads and an ensemble of approximately 20 will be chosen. Participants must be at least 16 years old to audition.

Those who plan to audition should prepare a 90-second audition package to include a short monologue and 16 bars from a vocal selection of their choosing. It is preferred that participants not use materials from Oklahoma! Accompaniment will be provided, but individuals should bring their own sheet music in the correct key in a binder. Audition check-in begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Music Wing of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on the Niceville campus, in room J-305 the Music Theory Lab. Auditions will take place in the Art History classroom, room J-328, starting at 2:00 p.m. Dance auditions will be held following the main audition in the Frances Smith Herron Dance Studio (J-125). For audition questions, contact the director for Oklahoma!, Clint Mahle at 729-6007 or email

New this year, a special Audition Workshop will be offered Friday, April 24, the day prior to Oklahoma auditions, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to assist participants to prepare for a professional audition. NWF State College vocal and theater instructors will be on hand to help individuals to practice and polish their audition materials. Pre-registration is not required for the free workshop, but individuals should come prepared with their pre-selected monologue and music. The workshop will be held in the Music Wing of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center in room J-304. For Audition Workshop questions, contact Allison Everitt at 729-6071 or 729-5382 or email

As the first musical written by the legendary team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances on Broadway, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. Rodgers and Hammerstein won a special Pulitzer Prize for Oklahoma! in 1944. The musical is based on Lynn Riggs' 1931 play, “Green Grow the Lilacs”. Set in the Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. A secondary romance concerns cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancée, Ado Annie.
