Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra Hosts Carnegie Hall’s Link Up! Program Performance at the Mattie Kelly Arts CenterMay 8, 2018
NICEVILLE- The Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra hosted the annual Link Up! concerts at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on April 30 and May 1 in celebration of Education Week. The annual event features Okaloosa and Walton County 4th graders who participate in an interactive concert with the orchestra. Throughout the year, the students in attendance learned concert song, a special dance and to play music on a recorder in preparation for performing the concert.
This 2017-2018 curriculum was The Orchestra Swings, one of 4 lessons that Carnegie Hall distributes to its partner orchestras. The Orchestra Swings explores the elements of swing and jazz featuring music of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and popular jazz songs of the 1930’s and 40’s. Through this curriculum students also learned about reading music, music history, composers, mathematical skills and other important skills related to music.
NFSO was the first to bring Carnegie Hall’s Link Up! program to the region. The program consists of a free year-long music curriculum and classroom activities that culminate in an interactive concert with the NFSO at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center.
