The Mattie Kelly Arts Center Galleries Joins Smithsonian Magazine’s 14th Annual Museum DaySeptember 17, 2018
The MKAC Galleries has the rare opportunity to open its doors on Saturday, September 22nd, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.
Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity, and inclusion. Over 250,000 people participated in last year’s event, and Museum Day 2018 is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.
The theme of this year’s Museum Day is Women Making History, honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation, and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well.
“Museum Day gives visitors a rare opportunity to visit the Galleries on a week-end, rather than a weekday. We are especially excited to have a theme this year. #WomenMakingHistory coincides well with our current exhibition, AQUIFERious, an exhibition curated by Margaret Ross Tolbert, a woman passionate about using art as a means for environmental advocacy,” says Gallery Assistant and Docent Coordinator Sarah Hawkins. “Margaret is joined by a few other artists that combine the fields of science and art, such as Jill Heinwerth and Mark Long. Visitors can visit the Galleries from 10 AM to 4 PM that day.”
